Weekend Pacifists @ Subliminal Projects

The curating cohorts at Shepard Fairey's Subliminal Projects have assemble art works - Weekend Pacifists - by Andy Jenkins, Michael Myers, Chris Pastras, Russ Pope and Michael Sieben whose modern lives and works infuses and overlaps the skateboarding and low-fi art world throughout the better part of the last two decades. Andy Jenkins, Michael Myers, Chris Pastras, Russ Pope and Michael Sieben's work embodies whimsy and social politics as united voices of an unique generation.

Weekend Pacifists exhibit opens on Saturday, August 22 at Subliminal Projects at 8pm to 11pm. Subliminal Projects is located @ 1331 W. Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, California [90026] @ 213.213.078.

Weekend Pacifists opens on Saturday, August 22 through Saturday, September 19 @ Subliminal Projects. And here are the artists' interpretations of their Weekend Pacifists entitlement:

Andy Jenkins: I work a regular schedule during the week and it's anything but passive. On the weekend I become passive, as my personal work steers me around by the hands.

Michael Myers: To me, the 'Weekend Pacifists' is about the feeling of hope and renewal that happens weekend after weekend. The weekend pacifist is about comaraderie, spirituality, gratefulness, and the quest for being content in the now and for the week ahead.

Chris Pastras: I'm a pacifist who loves the weekend, so I guess I fit the bill pretty well.

Russ Pope: Weekend Pacifists? Pacified by the weekend on a weekly basis. Good Stuff. Living everyday like it's a weekend, not saving the good times for two days a week.

Michael Sieben: Weekend Warriors is an album by Ted Nugent that was released in 1978. It's also a term used to describe people who follow their passions on the weekend. The phrase 'Weekend Pacifists' describes an individual who is dedicated to their passion full time thus leaving the weekend open to relaxing or taking a break from the war. Hopefully that doesn't sound too pretentious

Over his objections, Nick is forced by his boss to offer one of the suspects a light sentence in exchange for testifying against his accomplice. Fast forward ten years. The man who got away with murder is found dead and Clyde Shelton coolly admits his guilt. Then he issues a warning to Nick: Either fix the flawed justice system that failed his family, or key players in the trial will die. Soon Shelton follows through on his threats, orchestrating from his jail cell a string of spectacularly diabolical assassinations that can be neither predicted nor prevented. Philadelphia is gripped with fear as Shelton's high-profile targets are slain one after another and the authorities are powerless to halt his reign of terror. Only Nick can stop the killing, and to do so he must outwit this brilliant sociopath in a harrowing contest of wills in which even the smallest misstep means death. Kid Cudi & Artist Augor @ Complex - Video

The Cleveland native Scott Mescudi aka rapper Kid Cudi graces the cover and pages of Complex's 5th Annual Design & Style issue, and embeds himself in artist Augor's abstract illustrations. Kid Cudi and Augor talk about the process on this behind-the-scene video -

Here are blog excerpts from Joe La Puma's Kid Cudi: Where The Wild Things Are article:

Did you ever have an experience with a groupie that backs that up?: There was a moment when I was at this club and I was getting attention from all these chicks. At one point one was talking and gazing into my eyes all beautiful and shit—so fuckin' hot—and all of a sudden it seemed like time slowed down and everything got muffled, and in my brain I was just like, "This girl is the devil." And I immediately got up and wanted to leave. I was kinda tripping balls anyway. [Laughs.]

Matt Doyle & Augor's Illustration

You played me an outtake, which has to be the first love song I’ve ever heard about tripping on mushrooms with a girl: One of my co-workers asked me over to smoke, and she ended up persuading me to do 'shrooms. We popped a couple of caps, and the next thing you know we're listening to The Postal Service and all this real emotional music. We just vibed out; it was intense. I wanted to make a song for girls without it sounding like A Song For Girls, you know? There need to be songs that females can connect with, because I love all women. Not like the average dude that loves women ’cause they like to fuck; I just love women as a whole. I love them, not just the fact that they have vaginas.

Speaking of your grind, when did you decide to move to New York?: I was working at this restaurant in Cleveland. There was this white dude in his 40s who was cool as shit and would tell me, "You're funny and people like you. You need to move the fuck out of Ohio and just do this." My uncle told me I could come out there and stay with him in the South Bronx until I got on my feet. I'd never met him; this was my father's older brother, the last of my father’s siblings, so I wanted to make that connection anyway. I moved in 2004 with my little demo and maybe $500.

The 5th Annual Complex Design & Style issue is available in store and newsstands now.

Farrah Fawcett & Michael Jackson @ Vanity Fair

Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson co-grace the cover and pages of Vanity Fair September 2009 splitting issues. The posthumous interviews were complied from Michael and Farrah vintage interviews and from their friends and family. The two Vanity Fair's cover stories September 2009 issue hit newsstands in New York and Los Angeles on Wednesday, August 5 and nationally on Tuesday, August 11. And here are some blog snippets -

As for reality, do you still enjoy meeting your fans?: I enjoy all that sometimes, seeing people who love me, or buy my records. I think it's fun, and I enjoy meeting my fans and I think it's important. But sometimes people think you owe your life to them; they have a bad attitude, like 'I made you who you are.' That may be true—but not that one person. Sometimes you have to say to them, If the music wasn’t good, you wouldn't have bought it. Because some of them think they actually own you.

On MJ's declaration in 1984 that the original mix of Thriller had sounded like crap: Oh, it was terrible. And I cried at the listening party. I said, I'm sorry—we can't release this. I called a meeting with Quincy [Jones], and everybody at the [record] company was screaming that we had to have it out and there was a deadline, and I said, I'm sorry, I'm not releasing it. I said, It's terrible. So we re-did a mix a day. Like a mix a day. And we rested two days, then we did a mixing. We were overworked, but it all came out O.K.

To read more of Lisa Robinson's Michael Jackson: The Boy Who Would Be King interview, visit VanityFair.com.

Fawcett had always been more complicated than the clichés, the realities of her life far darker than the sunny image she projected. The gap between her public image and private reality was wide: I'm always more comfortable when I have on hardly any make-up, my hair is brown and I'm very unattractive.

Boy Interrupted - Evan Perry Documentary

I have been anticipating HBO's Boy Interrupted documentary for some time now, and finally watched it tonight and my God, even though, I didn't know 15-year-old Evan Perry and his deceased uncle Scott Perry, I learned from their untimely deaths about depression and a part of me will forever ache for them and their loved ones. You must see Boy Interrupted, it's a required appointment television at its best. HBO is knocking it out of the park lately, with their documentaries - Le Cirque, Teddy: In His Own Words, et cetera. To tweet Evan's parents and filmmakers - Hart & Dana Perry, visit twitter.com/BoyIntFilm.

Boy Interrupted: From a very young age, Evan Perry was obsessed with death. At 15, he committed suicide. Produced and directed by his mother, Dana Perry, this heartbreaking film delves into the complexity of Evan's disease and shares the story of a family's worst nightmare. The result is a wrenching chronicle of Evan's struggle with bipolar disorder and the impact of his suicide as seen through the family's photos, extensive personal video footage and interviews.

Chris Rock's Good Hair - Trailer

When I was younger and living in Chi-town housing projects with my uncle slash cousin's wife and step-kids, all the housing project kids had jehri curls and I wanted one so bad, but only the super-cool and alpha-male could pull off a black-perm. Jeff Stilson and Chris Rock's Good Hair documentary explores African-Americans and the process of perming their hair straight.

Good Hair is the winner of the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Prize @ the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and chekc out the new trailer below -

When Chris Rock's daughter, Lola, came up to him crying and asked, "Daddy, how come I don't have good hair?" the bewildered comic committed himself to search the ends of the earth and the depths of black culture to find out who had put that question into his little girl's head. Rock visits hair salons and styling battles, scientific laboratories, and Indian temples to explore the way black hairstyles impact the activities, pocketbooks, sexual relationships, and self-esteem of black people. Celebrities such as Ice-T, Kerry Washington, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Raven Symoné, Maya Angelou, and Reverend Al Sharpton all candidly offer their stories and observations to Rock while he struggles with the task of figuring out how to respond to his daughter's question. What he discovers is that black hair is a big business that doesn't always benefit the black community and little Lola's question might well be bigger than his ability to convince her that the stuff on top of her head is nowhere near as important as what is inside.

Chris Rock is repped by Carol Goll, Steve Levine and Edward Yablans @ International Creative Management, attorney Stephen Barnes @ Morris, Yorn, Barnes & Levine, publicist Leslie Sloane Zelnik @ Baker/Winokur/Ryder and animation voice-over agency @ Danis Panaro Nist.

Jeff Stilson is repped by Ted Miller @ Creative Artists Agency (CAA) and attorney Jon Moonves @ Del, Shaw, Moonves, Tanaka, Finkelstein & Lezcano.
