Midway ~ Message From The Gyre ~ Plastic

These photographs of albatross chicks were made in September 2009 on Midway Atoll, a tiny stretch of sand and coral near the middle of the North Pacific. The nesting babies are fed bellies-full of plastic by their parents, who soar out over the vast polluted ocean collecting what looks to them like food to bring back to their young. On this diet of human trash, every year tens of thousands of albatross chicks die on Midway from starvation, toxicity, and choking.

To document this phenomenon as faithfully as possible, not a single piece of plastic in any of these photographs was moved, placed, manipulated, arranged, or altered in any way. These images depict the actual stomach contents of baby birds in one of the world's most remote marine sanctuaries, more than 2000 miles from the nearest continent.

Madonna @ Raising Malawi - Matching Donation

Humanitarian and singer Madonna, family and friends are currently in Malawi [Africa] breaking ground on a new school - Raising Malawi Academy For Girls - and she's taken to the web - raisingmalawi.org - to ask us to take action and be involve. The Raising Malawi is about getting the community involve in their own destiny and not a hand out, so lets all get involve.

You can learn more about Raising Malawi @ RaisingMalawi.org and donate @ donate.raisingmalawi.org. If you prefer to contribute via mail, you can send your generous check to - Raising Malawi @ 1100 South Robertson Boulevard in Los Angeles, California [90035].

Madonna writes @ Huffington Post -

This week, my family and I are in Malawi to attend the ground breaking ceremony for Raising Malawi Academy for Girls.

I am making a straightforward request.

I'm writing to urge you to join me in saving the lives of some of the world's most vulnerable children. And I'm asking you to do it right away.

Raising Malawi, the organization I co-founded in 2006, is dedicated to ending the poverty and hardship endured by Malawi's one million orphans. By donating to Raising Malawi, you can literally transform the future for an entire generation. To encourage your involvement, I've pledged $100,000 to match your contributions dollar-for-dollar.

Why Malawi?

Seven years ago I might have asked myself this very same question. Why not Afghanistan, or India? There are impoverished children, desperate for health care and education, everywhere in the world. Something about Malawi's children connected with me and their hardships were too much for me to ignore. So I started learning more about Malawi, and, little by little, I began working with Malawians to improve their communities.

Visiting Malawi can be a very humbling experience. In the face of such overwhelming challenges, it's easy to feel helpless. At the same time, it is impossible not to recognize how much we can do to improve the lives of vulnerable children. Right now, I am particularly concerned about Malawian girls whose lives are made even more difficult simply because of their gender.
In 2008 Raising Malawi announced the creation of an all-girls boarding school, the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls. Architects have drawn up plans. We've identified a plot of land. And some of Malawi's poorest girls are eager for the opportunities that a comprehensive secondary education will bring them. But we're still in need of additional funds to complete this project, and there's no time to lose.

My own daughters will each have a solid secondary education. They have a family that assures them that they can be anything they want to be, that they are not limited in any way. I believe that the same should be true for girls in every part of the world, regardless of the circumstances of their birth. The girls of Malawi are bright and resourceful. They are eager to learn and grow.

When I look at my girls and see them thriving, it is my greatest wish that the girls in Malawi will have the same chance for happiness.

This is where you come in.

Please join me in supporting the work of Raising Malawi. Every dollar we collect will make a huge difference in a child's life. By
matching your donation, dollar for dollar, I will personally ensure that your contribution has an even greater impact. That's a
promise.

This is my call to you: Give an opportunity to a child who would otherwise have none. Support the work of Raising Malawi.
Will you join me?

Bill Plympton's Through The Wire - Kanye West

The Kanye West artistry continues with another eye-popping collaboration, this time with one of my favs - Academy Award nominee animator, cartoonist and illustrator Bill Plympton - on a graphic memoir titled Through The Wire. Bill Plympton illustrates 12 songs - word and lyrics - by Kanye West to "tell [West] story, from his decision to drop out of college to pursue his dreams in music, through his days spent folding chinos at the Gap while struggling at night to make a name as a producer, through the pivotal car accident that eventually set him on the course to stardom and the epiphany of realizing exactly who he had become."

The 80-pages Through The Wire hits book stores and online on Tuesday, November 10. Kanye West is repped by Charles King, Cara Lewis, Sara Newkirk and David Wirtschafter @ WME Entertainment and manager Gee Roberson @ Hip Hop.

Bill Plympton's Hot Dog screened at Sundance Film Festival in January 2009 as part of the U.S. Animated Shorts. The plucky Hot Dog hero joins his local fire department to save the earth from global fires and garners warranted affection. Ironically, the accolades and affections don't turn out the way Hot Dog had planned.

icedotcom

According to Amazon - "Plympton illustrates each of the songs in detail, his vision of Kanye's world. The songs are annotated with explanations of the references in the songs, biographical components that illuminate the lyrics, and their meaning on a deeply personal level.

The result is a one-of-a-kind book that initially grabs you and stays with you forever."

Tracy Morgan's I Am The New Black @ GQ

Saturday Night Live! alumni and 30 Rock star Tracy Morgan has the last laugh as his titular memoir - I Am The New Black - hits bookstores on Tuesday, October 20, while posing inside the pages of GQ November Issue. Tracy Morgan opens up to GQ senior editor Dan Fierman and boogie clown-down for pixer Terry Richardson. Enjoy some blog snippets and humorous tidbits below -

Terry Richardson

One can definitely see the roots of your comedy in your dad. In the book, you describe him pointing to the bleachers at your high school and telling you not just that you were conceived under the bleachers but that it was doggy style and he "gave it to her good." That's just nuts. Yeah, man, that was my dad. Man, he was honest. He reminds me a lot of Richard Pryor. He never lied to me about sex. But I was a kid, you know—I was 12 years old! I was like, What are you telling me this for?

Terry Richardson

Can we talk about Lorne Michaels for a second? In the book, you write, "Every Jewish man has to love one..." ...nigger in their life." Yeah. Lorne is my Cus D'Amato. Lorne helped build my confidence up, being in front of an all-white audience and all that. And he told me when he hired me for Saturday Night Live: You're not here because you're black; you’re here because you're funny!

David Letterman Apologizes To Wife

David Letterman will take to his tube-show tonight to apology again for his affair with staffers, which resulted into a $2 million extortion by 48 Hours Mystery Producer Robert Joe Halderman. Letterman apologizes to his wife - Regina Lasko - and Worldwide Pants employees. You can see the clip and read excerpt from Letterman's mea culpa below -

David Letterman @ Late Show w/ David Letterman - She has been horribly hurt by my behavior, and when something happens like that, if you hurt a person and it's your responsibility, you try to fix it. At that point, there's only two things that can happen: Either you're going to make some progress and get it fixed, or you're going to fall short and perhaps not get it fixed, so let me tell you folks, I got my work cut out for me.

I'm terribly sorry that I put the staff in that position. Inadvertently, I just wasn't thinking ahead. And, moreover, the staff here has been wonderfully supportive to me, not just through this furor, but through all the years that we've been on television and especially all the years here at CBS, so, again, my thanks to the staff for, once again, putting up with something stupid I've gotten myself involved in.

Now the other thing is my wife, Regina. She has been horribly hurt by my behavior, and when something happens like that, if you hurt a person and it's your responsibility, you try to fix it. And at that point, there's only two things that can happen: either you're going to make some progress and get it fixed, or you’re going to fall short and perhaps not get it fixed, so let me tell you folks, I got my work cut out for me.

I haven't seen screenwriter Michael Dougherty's directorial debut - Trick R Treat - and been waiting for the DVD and Blu-ray release, and now Dougherty will be at artist Alex Paradee's Hiding From The Normals solo show @ Gallery 1988 celebrating his film's direct-to-video release. The Hiding From The Normals opening reception is on Tuesday, October 6 @ G1988 located at 7020 Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, California [90038].

Alex Pardee

Gallery 1988 describes Alex Pardee's exhibition as - "the newest exhibition of work from Bay Area artist Alex Pardee, in what the artist calls the largest and most focused show of his career. Pardee has worked to not only create an impressive art show of all new paintings, but also a gallery installation, and atmosphere, allowing the viewer to enter the minds of the characters he's creating and the universe he's depicting, all from a Halloween-inspired tale he penned himself."

Little Dream @ WeAretheSuperlativeConspiracy

Thanks to We Are The Superlative Conspiracy [WeSC]'s Media Relations & Publicist Jessie Cohen and artists Vanessa Prager and Lizzy Waronker for letting me stop-by to preview-shoot Painter Prager and Sculptor Waronker's Little Dream tonight-only art show @ [WeSC]'s 144 South Robertson Boulevard location. I won't give anything away, but the art-pieces are NOT to be missed. The outdoor Little Dream installation will evoke feelings of wonderment whilst on a Tim Burton voyage as Alice in Alice-In-Wonderland.
