Elijah Blue's Step-&-Repeat @ Kantor Gallery

Here one art show, I missed last night - artist Elijah Blue's Step-and-Repeat opening reception of a red-carpet mockery [à la Warhol] at Kantor Gallery. I can't wait to oogle Elijah's pieces at Kantor later on today. The Step-and-Repeat paintings and installation exhibition debuts Elijah's inaugural fine-art pieces - which runs through through Friday, April 2.

S. Keenan @ WireImage

Kantor Gallery is located at 7025 Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, California [90038].

Shayna Gaffen @ Shayna@KantorGallery.com: Step-&-Repeat reflects on the amalgamation of the corporatocracy and celebrity cultures through use of the step-and-repeat wall, a staple at red-carpet events. Manufactured quickly and brandished with corporate logos, these backdrops are signage for the biggest sponsor, lacking any aesthetic substance; Blue has shifted the paradigm and forged carefully hand-painted panels. Using a photorealistic approach, he suggests that celebrity personalities have merged with these backdrops, becoming a single entity of commerce. The celebrity and the backdrop are the same thing, they are both billboards, they have fused - Blue. The wordage of Blue's logos, such as Ivory Tower, are the punch line and heart of his reflections, underlining his conclusions on the condition of celebrity, aiming fame back at itself. The installations themselves are so meticulously crafted that it is hard to differentiate between these process heavy painted panels and the one-night-stand of traditional, cheaply made step and repeat panels.

In addition to the three large installations based on the traditional step and repeat wall, the exhibit will feature five smaller works that have the essence of the larger pieces as they reflect through Blue's carefully chosen logos the relationship between celebrity and the corporatocracy.

Bob Dylan's Paintings @ Halcyon Gallery

Musician Bob Dylan will have his first art show of original paintings on canvas created from drawings and sketches while on tour from 1989 to 1992. These Dylan paintings are part of The Drawn Blank Series exhibition at Halcyon Gallery opening on Saturday, February 13 through Saturday, April 10 at 24 Bruton Street in London, England.

Halcyon Gallery

Bob Dylan: I just draw what's interesting to me, and then I paint it. Rows of houses, orchard acres, lines of tree trunks, could be anything. I can take a bowl of fruit and turn it into a life and death drama. Women are power figures, so I depict them that way. I can find people to paint in mobile home communities. I could paint bourgeois people too.

I'm not trying to make social comment or fulfil somebody's vision and I can find subject matter anywhere. I guess in some way that comes out of the folk world that I came up in.

Halcyon Gallery

Paul Green [President of the Halcyon Gallery]: These paintings are the culmination of everything Dylan has done with The Drawn Blank Series so far, signalling a new phase in the artist's career. The evolution of medium, from paper to canvas, has been an important development resulting in a creative explosion which has given greater meaning to the paintings. Bob Dylan on Canvas is the grand finale of the Drawn Blank years and the precursor of the new 'Brazil' series in which Dylan explores the canvas further.

LMFAO @ E.N.D. Tour w/ Black Eyed Peas

RR Sideshow: Guest Contributing Writer - Jae Joseph & Photographed by Reserve Result (RR)

It went down at the Phillips Arena in Atlanta, where LMFAO took the stage - opening for The Black Eyed Peas. The rockin-duo - Sky Blu & Redfoo - immediately established the fact this was more of a party than a concert. "Where are all my alcoholics at?!" was met with a big cheer, despite the fact it wasn't even 8:00pm. The lighthearted, groove-happy duo serenaded the crowd auto-tune style - subbed Atlanta into "I'm In Miami - Bitch" and had back-up dancers that included kids bizarrely donning Lego costumes. The Atlanta fans went into a frenzy of a sorts as the party began with high energy with intense and zanily wild fun.

**** ******

In a recent interview with the boys, I was able to sit down and capture more of their individual personalities. All I can say is if you are having a crummy day, they are sure to get you out of it. The vibrant and witty duo was nominated for a Grammy and I had the honor to intrude on their day of meeting with the Press and Media at The Staples Center. Shadow Tag: Louise Erdrich's Novel

RR Sideshow: Guest Contributing Writer - Jae Joseph

Author Louise Erdrich's novel - Shadow Tag - has an intriguing premise based on dual diaries and its journal entries. When Irene discovers her painter husband - Gil - has been reading her diary. So she creates a fictitious diary to appease Gil's snooping and a real one containing her personal entries.

The novel progresses between the two diaries with a third person voice - narrating the anatomy of an unraveling marriage. As Irene and Gil disappoint each other. Irene is manipulative, unhappy and self-destructive wife - numbing herself with alcohol - and the author Louise Erdich giving the readers no positive stance to counterbalance. Gil wants to possess Irene in both spirit through her body and his painting and in reality, through her soul. Nothing else is shown of Gil's personality except the mental and physical abuse, he unleashes on Irene and their children.

The game of Shadow Tag is a good metaphor for the way Gil - a husband and father - took from Irene and their children without giving anything of himself. The crumbling of their marriage - while depressing - is provoking and interesting - to say the least.

There are many things to recommend about this book. It's a quick read, and the use of the two diaries is just terrific. We see how the diaries play psychological mind game on Gil and how tempting it's for Irene to use her diaries to get vengeance, which inevitably comes back to hurt her.

Being a fan of this writing style and structure, I recommend Shadow Tag for those who would enjoy a suspenseful page turner, especially the ending chapters. Shadow Tag is highly recommended to those who're interested in Native American culture, ceremonies and history.

I Love You Philip Morris: Jim Carrey's Steven Russell is happily married to Debbie, and a member of the local police force when a car accident provokes a dramatic reassessment of his life. Steven realizes he's gay and decides to live life to the fullest - even if it means breaking the law. Steven's new, extravagant lifestyle involves cons and fraud and, eventually, a stay in the State Penitentiary where he meets sensitive, soft-spoken Ewan McGregor's Phillip Morris. His devotion to freeing Phillip from jail and building the perfect life together prompts Steven to attempt and often succeed at one impossible con after another.
