The first was their presidential nominee. The second was their vice presidential nominee. If Mitt Romney had won the nomination, the race would be much closer now. He ran a corporation, his specialty is economics, and he could lord that over the Democratic ticket, despite the fact that corporate CEOs aren't too popular these days and he was named after a baseball glove.

<a href="http://www.reserveresult.com"target="blank_"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9DA360qXlIs/SPFium8GuRI/AAAAAAAAABU/wNfu-m5L8Zc/s400/Angel+boligan.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256090792984230162" />
Angel Boligan / El Universal / Mexico City, Mexico

McCain is a self-described <a a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/14/opinion/14krugman.html?_r=2&hp&oref=slogin&oref=slogin"target="blank_">illiterate as far as the economy is concerned. Since he had warned the executive branch about the housing crisis in a strongly-worded letter, it behooved him to pick a running mate that knew something about the economy. He should have chose Romney as his running mate, or even Carly Fiorina, who ran Hewlett Packard.

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9DA360qXlIs/SPFojOwyAKI/AAAAAAAAABc/S0Q0KU7EwPw/s1600-h/luckovich-1.gif"target="blank_"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9DA360qXlIs/SPFojOwyAKI/AAAAAAAAABc/S0Q0KU7EwPw/s400/luckovich-1.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256097194585489570" />
Mike Luckovich / The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Plain and simple, McCain had a chance to compensate for his short-comings, but instead lunged for votes. Compare this with Obama, who picked Biden to compensate for his foreign policy short-comings, despite all evidence that picking Hillary Clinton would net him more votes. He was mocked by Rudy Giuliani for not picking Hillary for that reason, but the fact is we need a president who will do what is best, not what will get more votes. And in the process, he'll get both.
Robbins stars as Loris Harrow in director Gil Kenan's The City of Ember - which opens in theaters today.

The City of Ember: For generations, the people of the City of Ember have flourished in an amazing world of glittering lights--underground. Built as a refuge for humanity and powered by a massive generator, this City will only sustain for 200 years. Now Ember is falling into darkness as the generator fails. Despite growing concern for the future of their beloved City, Ember's students find themselves confronting the next step in their lives. A rite of passage for all graduates, it is Assignment Day, the day on which the Mayor himself will stand before the graduating students as they choose, by lottery, how they will spend their lives working for their society. Lina, praying with all her might to be a messenger, is devastated to be assigned to the Pipeworks, the vast network of pipes underneath the City. Her classmate, Doon Harrow, who wants more than nothing else to work in the Generator, panics when he pulls the messenger assignment. Doon offers to swap assignments with Lina. She is thrilled and grateful and eagerly changes jobs. Thus, an unlikely friendship is born. Lina finds herself zipping all over Ember, delivering important missives to even more important people, including the mayor himself. At home she cares for her aging and forgetful grandmother, and her baby sister Poppy. When an old metal box is discovered in their closet, Lina's grandmother is overjoyed. Completely sure that the contents of the box are of the utmost importance, she is completely bereft of any memory as to why. Lina manages to jimmy the lock open, and discovers some cryptic papers inside. Unable to piece the papers together, but sure that they are important, Lina resolves to decipher their meaning and enlists Doon's help. As blackouts in the City become more frequent, Lina and Doon realize that the information inside that box could lead to the salvation of their City and their fellow citizens. Now racing against the clock, the two follow the clues, cleverly maneuvering around corrupt politicians and unsavory characters hoping to keep them from their goal: restoring the light in the City of Ember.

On being a prime target of paparazzi and tweens: I'm always bobbing and weaving through alleyways trying to get to meetings, scouting out and looking outside doors and running around like Jason Bourne, I've always loved secret agent movies, whether it be James Bond or Bourne Identity. A lot of pundits are seeing it as racially tinged, I really don't think so. Disrespectful? Maybe, but not really racial. Here's the clip:

By the way, if you're wondering, Obama trounced McCain. McCain really needed to win big and he lost big, and in his beloved town hall format no less. At some points, McCain looked like he was lost in the woods shouting at mirrors. His jokes would've fallen flat even if the audience weren't instructed to keep quiet. There was a moment at the end when he had a bonding moment with a veteran but there weren't enough specifics laid out, with the exception of McCain casually mentioning a new plan of his to buy and refinance every bad mortgage, which would cost around $300 million. Republicans especially must be groaning about that.

The whole financial bailout situation has Republicans caught between a rock and a hard place, where the rock would be a second Great Depression and the hard place would be their laissez-faire principals and hatred for government spending. Democrats have only the rock to contend with. The result is what you saw with the bailout: the House Republicans revolted against their own leadership in the White House. The Republicans are a party split in half, and with no end to the financial turmoil in sight, it's going to be the Democrats who have any unity whatsoever.

My prediction is that Obama wins and wins handily, and has a sizeable majority in both houses of Congress. This country's government is going to rapidly change, and whether you agree with the proposed changes, something will definitely get done.

Part II: California's Los Angeles Campaign Volunteers

<a href="http://www.30barack.com/"target="blank_">If you live in the greater Los Angeles area and would like to volunteer for Obama campaign - www.30barack.com, Volunteer Coordinator Lisa Delgin could use your help at Phonebanks. A lot of pundits are seeing it as racially tinged, I really don't think so. Disrespectful? Maybe, but not really racial. Here's the clip: By the way, if you're wondering, Obama trounced McCain. In 1928, Jolie's Christine Collins of Los Angeles reported her nine-year old son, Walter, as missing. In the midst of charges of corruption and negative publicity, the Los angeles police department was desperate for a positive P.R. boost from solving the case. After much searching, they finally found a boy in DeKalb, IL claiming to be Walter, and returned him to his mother. But it wasn’t really him. This immutable fact galvanized Collins on a quest to find the truth and a battle against authorities that threatened to tear her life apart.
